 Core Word of the Week: A Collaborative Approach to Communication throughout the School Day

Core words are essential to communication for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) users of all levels. Core word of the week is a solution to incorporate core words throughout the school day. This presentation will introduce a framework to share communication goals between special education teachers, general education teachers, preschool teachers, related services providers, and parents. Throughout this course participants will learn how to create a ready-to-use outline for implementing core word of the week throughout our school building. Come save time, gather free resources, and experience a day in the life of a core word approach, tailoring for students needs to increase learning and inclusion tomorrow!

What You'll Learn

Upon completion of this session, you will be able to:

  • Identify three benefits to multimodal core word instruction targeted to support complex communicators throughout their school day.
  • Evaluate their current evidence-based school wide AAC and inclusion practices.
  • Formulate a school wide core word of the week framework incorporating emergent literacy, peer support networks, and general education classroom participation.

Emily earned a Master of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Cincinnati, has been practicing since 2021, and works in the school system. She has experience with low and high-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Emily is passionate about using a total communication approach to increase the participation of students throughout the school setting. Emily believes all people have the ability to communicate and participate meaningfully in their schools, communities, and families.
