Transforming AAC Practices: Insights on a Specific Language System First approach within a Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Framework
This session explores how school districts can integrate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) into their procedural systems to empower students to say whatever they want to say however they want to say it, as well as support the staff charged with teaching these students to become autonomous communicators. Participants will learn about the Specific Language System First model and the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework, both of which are designed to foster AAC adoption, support transitions from low-tech to high-tech systems, and create consistent, inclusive practices across settings. Drawing on the experiences of a district team, the session will address common barriers, share successful strategies, and provide actionable tools for educators to ensure every student has access to effective communication.
