Supporting Language & Literacy with AAC: Improving Outcomes Through Research, Practice, & Accessible Books for Early Learners

This session will provide an in-depth exploration of literacy and AAC. We will examine how the AAC industry and professionals have addressed literacy in the past, the state of the current research on literacy best practices, how AAC devices currently serve as effective tools for early literacy instruction, as well as needed improvements. Topics will include the value of phonetic keyboards, phonemic association tools, adapted literacy activities, and how symbol support does, and does not, support literacy development. Attendees will gain insights into fun, meaningful and practical applications and future advancements needed to improve literacy outcomes for early learners using AAC.

Alicia Alverson (she/her) is an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist and RESNA certified Assistive Technology Professional with background in alternative access. She has experience working in home-care, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, schools, and skilled nursing facilities providing AAC and AT services. She is passionate about supporting individuals’ agency and autonomy through access to communication and assistive technology integration. Alicia is employed full-time for Smartbox Assistive Technology, the developers of Grid 3 software and speech generating devices.

Amanda Grabiner is a dedicated Speech Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology Professional. With a passion for enhancing communication and quality of life, Amanda has devoted her career to working closely with individuals using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) across the lifespan and in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, clinics, and at home. Currently employed by Smartbox Assistive Technology, Amanda employs a compassionate and client-centered approach, fostering connection, and empowering individuals to reach their communication goals.
