#AACES2025 Conference Session

The Positive Developmental Model: a Developmental Relationship Based Intervention (DRBI) Approach to Autism Care

The presentation focuses on how understanding and applying developmental principles, alongside fostering strong relationships, can enhance communication with children, particularly those who use AAC. A Developmental Relationship Based Intervention Model will be described and illustrated through a case study. Participants will see how using a flexible, child-centered approach that combines developmental awareness, relational warmth, and multi-modal communication techniques can significantly support a child’s communication growth. Learn from 3 SLPs who work together in an interdisciplinary clinic alongside mental health professionals and occupational therapists as they reflect together. Along with sharing updated research findings regarding developmental work, they will take participants through the case study of young, minimally speaking, super fun and bright autistic child. Enjoy watching this joyful journey which has positively impacted this child, his family, and his clinicians.
