Supporting Family Engagement with AAC: Sustainable Ideas for Busy People
Families of young children who have very limited language often struggle to support their children’s communicative development. This presentation shares the results of the Stepping Into AAC project, which focused on the creation of materials to introduce parents to AAC, guide them through the early months of using new communication tools and strategies, and engage their school teams around this content. These free, web-based materials include video and print content. The materials are designed to be used over 20 weeks, with easy-to-digest information and simple hands-on activities to build their AAC knowledge, skills, and habits.
Communication boards that align with popular AAC apps are used to give families hands-on experience in facilitating AAC use. Over 100 days, families will get practice with 40 frequently-used words and key intervention strategies. Each week focuses on a different topic, communicative function, and set of core words. Over 60 short videos explain AAC concepts in family-friendly ways. In addition to explanatory information, the videos include clips of AAC in action and parent interviews. Many of the videos have accompanying handouts that can be used to support learning of foundational concepts. There are also weekly newsletters that expand on key AAC content, provide additional resources, and address frequently asked questions. Families will learn from these but can also share them with their child’s school and therapy teams. .Participants will learn how to access the Stepping Into AAC materials so that they can use them with families of the children they serve.
