Strategies to Support Early Language, Learning, & Literacy Development through AAC with Grid
Comprehensive and multi-modal AAC support in a language-rich environment facilitates early learners in developing their language and communication skills. In this talk we will explore ways that Grid 3 can be used as a part of a robust and comprehensive communication and language environment that not only supports a child with communication challenges but also supports language learning for everyone. We will also highlight functional ways that Grid can be utilized within the home and early learning classrooms. The goal is for attendees to come away not only with an understanding of Grid but also with practical strategies they can immediately put to use.

Alicia Alverson, MS, CCC-SLP, ATP
Alicia Alverson (she/her) is an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist and RESNA certified Assistive Technology Professional with a passion for alternative access. She has experience working in home-care, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, schools, and skilled nursing facilities providing AAC and AT services. She is passionate about supporting individuals’ agency and autonomy through access to communication and assistive technology integration. Alicia is employed full-time for Smartbox Inc., the developers of Grid 3 software and speech generating devices. She also serves as a board member of the Northwest Augmentative Communication Society.
Melanie Gylling, MA, CCC-SLP
Melanie Gylling (she/her) is an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist with extensive experience working in a variety of settings, including outpatient rehabilitation, schools, and long-term care facilities. She is passionate about AAC and providing education and support to SGD users and their support teams. Melanie is employed full-time for Smartbox Inc., the developers of Grid 3 software and speech generating devices.
