Using Typical Development to Guide AAC Practices

Drag to resize
Get a refresher on typical communication development from infancy onward and learn how these staples are the best guide to AAC assessment and intervention practices.   This is a quickie, but a goodie, and a great place to start your AAC assessment and intervention journey, or just check in and freshen up.

We'll start at the beginning of the typical communication Journey and draw parallels to the AAC Journey, using videos, cases, and tons of resources to stay engaged and inspired.  You'll learn how to dust off the knowledge you already have about language and communication to help demystify AAC and get some research-based EBP's to add onto those tools.  We'll explore the AAC Compass Framework for assessment and intervention planning and execution and leave off with some resources for ongoing learning.

This course is meant to be an overview for all professional levels.  You can take a deeper dive into these concepts in several of our other trainings here in The AAC Academy.

Meet the instructor

Tannalynn Neufeld

I am a licensed and ASHA certified speech-language pathologist with over 15 years of clinical experience supporting children who are learning to communicate with the support of AAC and their families. Alongside ongoing clinical practice with AAC assessment and intervention as a private consultant, I have dedicated the latter years of my career to helping other professionals empower themselves with the knowledge and skills they need to support children who use AAC as a mentor. In my main role as an assistant teaching professor at a major university in Washington, I support graduate students in developing their pre-service background in AAC as lead instructor for the AAC Foundations course. I am looking forward to working with each of you on your AAC Journey!
