#AACES2026 Conference Session

Using Journals to Support Early Multi-Symbol Communication

Discover how simple, visual journals can support children with complex communication needs as they move from single symbols to meaningful multi-symbol messages. These photo- and AAC-based notebooks capture everyday experiences and create natural opportunities for modeling longer utterances, expanding vocabulary, and supporting early narrative skills. In this session, participants will learn how journals can be created and used across home, school, and therapy settings to encourage independence, family involvement, and a growing sense of identity. Practical examples will highlight how everyday routines can become powerful moments for communication growth.

Play for Every Body

The theme for #AACES2026 is "Play for Every Body."  Play is the heartbeat of childhood — but for many children with disabilities, play isn’t always accessible. Our Play for Every Body campaign is about opening doors: adapting environments, rethinking routines, and equipping families and professionals with practical strategies. When we say Play for Every Body, we mean every child, every ability, every body.
