#AACES2026 Conference Session

Play-Based Interactive Storytelling with AAC Communicators: With and Without AI Support

Interactive storytelling during play offers powerful opportunities for preschool children who use AAC to communicate, collaborate, and make meaning. This session explores how educators can support AAC users in co-constructing stories through developmentally appropriate, child-led play. Participants will first examine evidence-based pedagogical practices—such as wait time, least-to-most prompting, and visual supports—that promote active participation, language growth, and agency in storytelling interactions. Building on this foundation, the session will then introduce ways AI can be used as a teacher support tool for planning, reflection, and strengthening implementation—without replacing human interaction or child communication. Attendees will leave with practical, classroom-ready strategies for supporting AAC-based storytelling in early childhood settings.

Play for Every Body

The theme for #AACES2026 is "Play for Every Body."  Play is the heartbeat of childhood — but for many children with disabilities, play isn’t always accessible. Our Play for Every Body campaign is about opening doors: adapting environments, rethinking routines, and equipping families and professionals with practical strategies. When we say Play for Every Body, we mean every child, every ability, every body.
