ABOUT THIS COURSE

This introductory course (the second in the AAC, Literacy, & the SLP Learning Series) explores how SLPs and other literacy instruction partners can apply the Science of Reading to emergent literacy instruction for AAC users and other learners with complex communication needs. Participants will examine the conditions that support successful literacy learning and explore evidence-based instructional practices that build alphabetic knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension through shared and independent reading. Practical strategies for meaningfully integrating AAC into literacy instruction will be emphasized throughout.

Designed for speech-language pathologists and other professionals who support AAC users, this course provides practical strategies that can be immediately applied across early intervention, school, and clinical settings. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of how to embed evidence-based literacy instruction into language intervention, integrate AAC during shared reading, and create engaging learning experiences that support both literacy development and expressive communication.
Great for:
Speech-language pathologists and other professionals in clinic, school, or home care settings who work with emergent literacy learners with complex communication needs of all ages.
